The theme of this Integrated Thematic Unit focuses on understanding human emotion in the context of World History. Specifically, this unit will examine the moral and ethical conflicts associated with historical events. Students will learn about WWII (World History), The Manhattan Project (World History, Physics), and evaluate psychological theories that answer the essential question: “How and why do societies justify otherwise intolerable acts?”
This theme can only be addressed by combining skills and knowledge from different subject areas. WWII will be analyzed in World History by providing students with historical context and background. In Psychology, students will examine the moral and ethical implications of wartime acts and thinking. Students will deepen their historical knowledge of WWII by learning the details and purpose of the Manhattan Project. In Physics, students will be exposed to quantum physics and theoretical physics (e.g., Newton’s Laws).
Students will work together in groups to develop their collaboration, presentation, artistic and technology skills. Students will work in groups to develop a presentation, create propaganda, and complete a webquest. Students will work on the ITU in Physics, World History, and Psychology. As a culminating activity that will serve as a formal, summative assessment of learning, student groups will present their learning to middle school students, teachers, administrators, and peers.
